Editing and indexing
We offer a variety of editorial services including:
Substantive editing
Improving the overall presentation of a piece of writing, its contents, scope, length, level and organization. We may suggest improvements for the author to make or, by agreement with the author, rewrite and rearrange material ourselves.
Detailed editing
We check whether the author’s meaning is being expressed clearly, without ambiguity, repetition or contradiction. We look at spelling, grammar, punctuation, choice of words, use of abbreviations, comprehensiveness and accuracy of bibliographies and footnotes. We also check for consistency according to a house style or to the author’s own style.
Editing can be done either on the hard copy of the original manuscript or on-screen. If the latter, we can use the Track Changes facility in Word so that all parties can easily see what changes have been made.
Proofreading
This involves incorporating author corrections, and reading through at proof stages for typographical errors and consistency.
Indexing
When page proofs of a publication are ready, we meticulously compile a map of its contents to create a useful tool for the reader. Beginning with a computer-generated concordance, we group like concepts and apply other intellectual analysis such as cross-referencing, then edit the index for structure, clarity and consistency and format it to your specifications.
